In Jeremiah 1: 5, God spoke to the prophet thus, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.” This scripture makes it clear that we are not accidental creatures. We were all created on purpose. Each of us was created by the will (willful decision and action) of God and if so, keeping within the confines of that divine will is the only thing that will guarantee our successful sojourn here on earth.

The will of God is the mind of God concerning a particular person, thing or situation. It is what God wants said or done. It is God’s mind concerning the little things and big things of our lives.

To walk or live in the will of God is to live in perfect obedience to the leading of the Holy Spirit. It is going where God says go, like Evangelist Philip in Acts 8: 26 – 27 responded to the Holy Spirit and ended up revealing Christ to the Ethiopian eunuch and nation at large.

Hear Paul in Romans 12: 1- 2: “I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” This tells us that there are levels or types of God’s will.

Take note! Anything that runs contrary to God’s Word is anti His will. A few of them are listed as well as the consequence of practicing them is stated in Galatians 5: 19- 21- “Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, revellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

There is a General will of God for all men, the chief of them all being salvation. It also includes prosperity and health.

There is a Specific will of God for every individual. This can only be accessed by those who are sensitive to the voice of the Holy Spirit of God. This is the only way you can know who to marry or what job opportunity to accept or even what clothes to wear on a particular day or which route to take to work etc. This has to do with what God is saying now. Hebrews 12: 25 says “So be careful and do not refuse to listen when God speaks” (NCV).  Psalm 32: 8 says, “I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye” and Isaiah 48: 17 says, “… I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” There is always a ‘now’ word for every destiny conscious believer. It is this will of God that will help you take the right decision at the right time.

There is also the Perfect will of God. This encompasses the direct word or instruction of God as stated in the scriptures directly. You cannot miss ‘thou shall not steal’ or ‘honour thy father and they mother.’ It is God’s direct will as revealed in His word.

There is the Permissive will of God. This is when you go ahead to do that which is at variance with God’s perfect will for your life. That is Samson going to marry a Philistine woman against God’s law that says that they must not marry strange women (Judges 14: 3- 4). God used it to deal with the Philistines but that was not His perfect will for Samson as far as marriage was concerned. That is Balaam going to consult for Balak against God’s initial counsel (Numbers 22: 5- 12). His continual interest in going to Balak made God to permit Him (Numbers 22: 16- 21) and he nearly lost his life, if not for his donkey (Numbers 22: 23- 30). God, however used it to establish the blessing upon the Israelites (Numbers 23: 7- 10, 20) but at the end Balaam died for his greed (Numbers 31: 8). It is the Children of Israel in Psalm 106: 15, “And he gave them their request; but sent leanness into their soul.” It is forcing God to approve your will above His.

Walking in the will of God is very important in the life of a Christian. This is because walking in the will of God can make the difference between life and death, promotion or demotion, commendation or condemnation, victory or defeat and even making heaven and perishing in hell. Walking in God’s will is so important that

  • It guarantees that the presence of God will reside with you. In Joshua 1: 5, consequent upon Joshua obeying to do the will of God, God told him, “as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.”
  • It guarantees provision. When Jesus first sent out His disciples to go preach the gospel in Luke 9:3, “he said unto them, Take nothing for your journey, neither staves, nor scrip, neither bread, neither money; neither have two coats apiece” and in Luke 22:35, after they had returned, “he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye anything? And they said, Nothing.”
  • It guarantees preservation and protection. David was never used to going to war without asking for God’s will. Because of this, he was always preserved and victorious (1 Samuel 30: 8, 1Sa 23:1- 5 & 7- 13). Ahab on the other hand tried this- he even tried to manipulate the will of God and came back home a dead man. Jehoshaphat went to that same battle with Ahab and was only saved by God’s mercy (1Kings 22).
  • It guarantees peace. Peace is not the absence of storms. It is a calm confident trust in God even in the time of storms. Psalm 119:165 “Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.”

Walking out of God’s will is spiritual lawlessness. May it not be a character trait in your life in Jesus name. Walk in God’s will and you will always find Him, your shield and exceeding great reward in Jesus name.
