Knowing that open heaven signifies uncommon favour, answered prayers, supernatural breakthroughs an so on, the next question will naturally be, how can I be a partaker? How can heaven open and stay open for me always?

Let us again x-ray the life of our master Jesus. He had lived for thirty years already before heaven opened for him. Could it be that thirty years is the age for manifestation? I say ‘NO’ it is not written anywhere that thirty is the age for manifestation, even though men like Joseph and David entered their breakthrough at about thirty. What about Joash (2 Chronicles 24) who under the protection and tutelage of Jehoiada the priest who became king at seven. What about Josiah in 2 Chronicles 34:1 who succeeded his father king Amon. He carried out a great revival for the Lord even though his father who he had succeeded had not done well. The open heaven of Jesus did not come at thirty because that was the set time. I believe that the set time of Jesus was determined by other factors. Let us look at them briefly.

  1. Submission to the will of God. In Matthew 3: 13- 15, it is recorded that “Then cometh Jesus from Galilee to Jordan unto John, to be baptized of him. But John forbad him, saying, I have need to be baptized of thee, and comest thou to me? And Jesus answering said unto him, Suffer it to be so now: for thus it becometh us to fulfil all righteousness. Then he suffered him.” I do not know how many times Jesus had tried to get John to baptize Him without success or perhaps this was the first and only time. However, it is clear here that John out of ‘respect’ wanted to shy away from baptizing Jesus and as long as Jesus was not baptized BY JOHN, the heaven would not open for Him.

The clear lesson here is that we must choose submission to spiritual and other appropriate authorities if we must enjoy open heaven. In Luke 2: 51, even though Jesus was zealous for the work of the father, He still needed to be tutored and mentored. At the promptings of Mary and Joseph, “he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them:” and as a result He began to increase “…in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man”

Definitely, also, He knew that He was greater than John the Baptist but God had so ordained it that it is through the baptism that He would be announced. John the Baptist in John 1: 33 says, “… he that sent me to baptize with water, the same said unto me, Upon whom thou shalt see the Spirit descending, and remaining on him, the same is he which baptizeth with the Holy Ghost.” If you will enjoy open heaven, your submission to God, made manifest in your submission to your spiritual, parental, academic etc seniors is a guaranteeing factor. Your submission is your act of righteousness which displays the state of your heart. If God does not see your submission, He will not open the devil for you

  1. Luke 3: 21- 22 says, “Now when all the people were baptized, it came to pass, that Jesus also being baptized, and praying, the heaven was opened, And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” Jesus did not just submit unto baptism, He prayed and kept praying throughout His earthly ministry. What happened while He prayed tells us what He was praying for. Your prayer is your verbal expression of your deep desires to God. If you keep your desires in your heart, it is then a mere wish. Until you ask, you cannot receive. Matthew 7: 7 is very clear on that. I believe He asked God for empowerment from on high and so the heaven indeed was opened and the Holy Spirit was let down upon Him.

The clear lesson here is that prayer is key to breakthrough. Prayer is key to operate here on earth in victory. Prayer is what will make God to place His signature of approval on you. This is because in prayer you declare your inabilities and depend on God for His empowerment. Prayer is an act of honor to God and He says in 1Samuel 2: 30, “for them that honour me I will honour,”

  1. Jesus added fasting to the above. He was led into the wilderness by the same Holy Spirit that had just come upon Him for one purpose- “to be tempted of the devil.” To overcome, He fasted. In fasting, you give up your sources of natural strength and throw all your weight on God to catch you. In fasting, you deprive the flesh so that there will be no ground for boasting at the end. He defeated the devil and the angels came to strengthen Him. Do not let your cravings have a better part of you this year. Fast along with prayer regularly. IT WORKS FASTER when you depend on God and not on the flesh.
  2. The garments of praise and worship. This is the continual acknowledging of the person and power of God in your life. It is the creation of an atmosphere that God loves to dwell in. He, the bible says, inhabits the praises of His people. It was like what happened on the day Esther went to meet King Ahasuerus. The bible says in Esther 5: 1, “Now it came to pass on the third day, that Esther put on her royal apparel, and stood in the inner court of the king’s house…” The long and short story was that, even though it should been a death sentence on her, she received favour from the king. The practice of praise and worship will keep your heaven opened always. At Lazarus grave side, Jesus began by saying, “Father, I thank thee that thou hast heard me…” (John 11: 41). When He finally called on the dead man, he rose up back to life.

This year, it is my prayer that you will never experience a closed heaven in Jesus name. as you practice these things, you will enjoy uncommon favour and acceptance- an open heaven indeed, in Jesus name.
