Psalm 139 makes it clear that God is so present everywhere that there is no hiding from His presence. In other words, God sees all, knows all and can do all things according to His will. God’s presence is real everywhere. His presence is everywhere but not many people see the manifestations of His presence. In the beginning, in the midst of the chaos according to Genesis 1: 2, “the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters”. The presence of God was present but nothing good had happened. But at the word of God in verse 3, the presence of God which had seemed passive began to actively bring creation to being.
One good thing is that though God’s presence is everywhere, His tangible, saving and miracle working power is only with every child of God, that is, those who have received Him and believed in Him; those who have been born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God, according to John 1: 12- 13.
The sad thing is that not every child of God knows this reality. Not every child of God knows the quantum of divine power that he carries by virtue of the presence of God that is with him. That is why God Himself says in Hosea 4: 6 that, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge:” Many of God’s people have lost many a thing because they failed to realise that God has prepared for them in advance.
Jesus was speaking to His disciples before He was translated by ascension to heaven in Matthew 28: 20, “…lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. …” His word is our number one assurance that we have been well provided for. He did not promise us His presence but gave it to us. In Exodus 33: 14, (“And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.”), it was a promise which God made to Moses and fulfilled. In Matthew it a gift to the church, given without our asking.
We therefore need to know by His word that we have been given the greatest gift of all. Paul writing in 1Corinthians 2:12, says “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”
We need to know that it is by the presence of God which is with us that we are able to love and live at peace, full of joy and do the works of righteousness and live in victory over sin. It is by the presence of God that we know when we go astray in sin and it is by His presence that reconciliation to God is extended to us. It is by the presence of God that we attract favour and help. It is by the presence of God that we are able to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers and raise the dead. It is written in Acts 10: 39, “How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.” It therefore takes the presence of God to LIVE RIGTH and DO RIGHT.
In order to enjoy the reality or manifestation of God’s presence
- You Must Be Conscious That He Is With You. Jesus has never left you since the day He said he will be with you in Matthew 28: 20. So when you pray and say, ‘Lord let your presence be with me’ He will probably reply saying. ‘I never left you.’ You therefore need to be conscious of the fact that He is with you already and wants to make Himself manifest in your life if you will yield to Him.
The Ark of the Lord which was the symbol of God’s presence in the Old Testament was in the house of Abinadab for twenty years as we see in 1Samuel 7:1- 2 but we never read of any tangible blessing that got manifested in his life but the same Ark was placed in the house of Obededom, for only three months in 2Samuel 6: 11-12 and we read that the “LORD blessed Obededom, and all his household” so much that David got jealous and wanted the Ark for himself in the city of David. I believe that the difference between the two men was their level of consciousness of God’s presence.
To be conscious of God’s presence is to remember that He is in present in all His love, power and might to do all that needs to be done and undo all that needs to be undone. It is to know that God is not only available but that He is around to show Himself mighty, not just to move around as in Genesis 1: 2 but also to bring His word to pass in turning your darkness to light and to shine through you to the world.
- You need to pray that God will show Himself mighty in your life. You need to pray for yourself that you should never get distracted or separated from His presence by focusing on irrelevancies or by indulging in sin. Isaiah 59:1- 2 says, “Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.” In other words, the thing that makes God’s presence seem far away is not that God moved far away but that our sins create a barrier between us and Him. We need to pray to live right and live right.
- Practice Love and Compassion. Every time Jesus wanted to do a miracle, we see that His disposition becomes compassionate. Love and compassion is required for the power of God to flow through a man to men. If there is pride in your heart, God will never feel free to show Himself mighty in and through your life. In Matthew 14:14, it is written, “And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and he healed their sick.”
- Read, Speak and Act the Word. In Isaiah 34:16, God says, “Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read: no one of these shall fail, none shall want her mate: for my mouth it hath commanded, and his spirit it hath gathered them.” In other words, when you read something from the bible about your desire and you boldly speak it in faith, the Spirit of God will gather those words to bring them to pass. That is why it is also written, “he shall have whatsoever he saith” (Mrk 11: 23). When you value the word of God, to read it, to speak according to it and to practice it perpetually, you shall live in victory over life always. The presence will always be active where ever the word of God is as it happened in Genesis 1: 3 where the presence of God which was just moving in verse 2 became active to produce light in verse 3.
Beloved, God does not just want to be around you, he wants you to see and exhibit his glory. He wants men to take note of the fact that He is with you. He wants you to enjoy direction and miracles. You can start enjoying His presence today. Just practice those few things. You are blessed already in Jesus name.
