One of the major questions everyone should ask himself this year is, ‘am I ready to collect the showering blessings of 2016?’ The most positive reaction to the sighting of the formation rain clouds in a land where portable water is a problem is to get containers ready to collect the water.
In 2 Kings 3, three kings, of Israel, Judah and Edom embarked on a military campaign that was ordinarily going to turn out well. They had all the signs, the strength and other resources to make the war on Moab a quick victory but along the line, their very lives were endangered because their supply of water finished.
Like cool water on a hot day, they met with Elisha and even though he would have forsaken them for the sins of the Jehoram, the king of Israel and the house of Ahab, he on account of Jehoshaphat’s right standing with God, gave them a word that the water will come the next day without rain or wind but they were required to dig ditches.
The lessons I want to bring out of this story are simple but powerful:
- Be a Jehoshaphat:
Elisha said to Jehoram in verse 14, “… As the LORD of hosts liveth, before whom I stand, surely, were it not that I regard the presence of Jehoshaphat the king of Judah, I would not look toward thee, nor see thee.” Everywhere you find yourself this year, be a Jehoshaphat; a man God will consider and pour out His blessing in a midst of a wicked and hardened world such as we live in. God’s promise is to bless us and make us a blessing to our world and we need to have a right standing with Him to make that possible. This year may unbelievers feel safe because of your presence in Jesus name. Above that, may unbelievers envy you enough to follow you to serve your God in Jesus name.
- Embrace Worship:
Elisha said, “…bring me a minstrel.” And while the minstrel played, the Lord gave him the word for the kings. Praise and worship, apart from being the life style of a believer is a tool for connecting to divine direction. Isaiah 48:17 says, “Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go.” When we live in worship, we will always enjoy direction, especially when we need God in a hurry. When you are confused and do not know what to do, take some good time off to sing to the Lord.
- Believe the Word:
Isaiah 44:26 makes us to understand that God “…confirmeth the word of his servant, and performeth the counsel of his messengers;” You must be a believer. You must be a bible Christian. If doubt the word of the Lord, whose word will you choose to believe? If you cannot believe God, then you are truly hopeless. Elisha, without fear looked at the kings and told them “Ye shall not see wind, neither shall ye see rain; yet that valley shall be filled with water, that ye may drink, both ye, and your cattle, and your beasts. And this is but a light thing in the sight of the LORD: he will deliver the Moabites also into your hand.” God has blessed you with our father in the Lord and the entire pastoral team to speak into and over your life. May you not look outside for what you have in abundance within. Remember the words of Jehoshaphat in 2Chronicles 20: 20, “…Believe in the LORD your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” Do not be stagnated in this world at the level of your faith in God alone. Your faith in God guarantees your eternity but your faith in those He has set over you guarantees your keeping and growth until you are ripe for eternity at a good old age. Believe your man of God. He is the custodian of your spiritual, physical and material health, prosperity and growth.
- Look beyond the Physical:
We all know that there are signs that precede rainfall but Elisha told the kings to expect water without those signs. This scenario makes it clear that God does not depend on the weather to pour us out a blessing. He can bless in the year of famine as much as He can in the year of plenty. We need to look up to God to fulfil His word no matter the odds. Do not be deceived by the ecomic trends. God is not bound by them. His blessing will still come to you if you will dare to look God’s way.
- Dig the Ditches:
“Thus saith the LORD, Make this valley full of ditches”. Every extraordinary visitation from God requires an extraordinary preparation. God told the kings to dig ditches to collect the coming water. He calls on us to sow seeds this year. He calls on us to set up businesses this year. He calls us to put in some effort in our academics this year. God needs a point of contact. He wants a place where His blessing can meet with us. He needs the work of your hands. Do something. Your God-required actions will look foolish to the world but that is your cutting edge. By the time your world realizes the wisdom in your actions, you would have been established in full. The ground may be hard, the money may be hard to come by, the odds may be high against you but just do it, dig the ditches.
- Use the water for service:
They got the water and were strengthen to bring Moab the rebellious nation into submission. God will bless you efforts this year. The showers will definitely fall for you but you must determine to remain with your source. God’s will is clear in Psalm 112:3, “Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth forever”.
I see you seeing, handling and testifying of showers of blessing this year in Jesus name.
