It is no more news to hear that life is full of ups and downs. Life comes in different shades that one may soon begin to embrace the world’s philosophy of ‘what will be will be’. It is not God’s design for the things that want to be, to be, whenever they want to be. Instead, at creation God intentionally created man in Genesis 1: 26 in His own image, after His own likeness: to have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth.
When therefore life throws stones at you in spite of all your faith and efforts, you should not give in, thinking it is your divine lot in life. There is one thing you must remember in the midst of every ugly experience and that is the fact that God has not forgotten you. You must remember that He has not vacated the driver’s seat of your life and handed over the steering wheel to the devil. If God wanted to leave your life, He would never hand you over to the devil. God would rather leave you empty than hand you over to the devil and since he would never leave you just like that, we have this sure word from Him in Hebrews 13: 5 saying, “I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.” Also in Isaiah 41: 13, God says, “For I the LORD thy God will hold thy right hand, saying unto thee, Fear not; I will help thee.” What an assurance from the King and Lord of the universe Himself. If the devil ever took charge of any man, it is not God that handed the man over; it is that man that left God to embrace the devil.
Let us emphasize a line of scriptures that have been brought to our attention this week. Isaiah 50: 7- 11:
7 “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.” If God will not help you, who will then? You must come to this point of knowledge, that He will help you as He has said. You must believe God to the extent of letting the devil know that you are not forsaken no matter the case. You must believe it and say it.
8 “He is near that justifieth me; who will contend with me? let us stand together: who is mine adversary? let him come near to me.” You must be conscious of the presence of your God. Do not stand to battle your adversary the devil alone. Being aware that your God is close by gives assurance of victory. It enables you to taunt the enemy. When you walk in the consciousness of the presence of the Lord your God, you can tell the devil, ‘come catch me if you can’ knowing that by reason of God’s presence, you have become unconquerable,
9 “Behold, the Lord GOD will help me; who is he that shall condemn me? lo, they all shall wax old as a garment; the moth shall eat them up.” You must know that with God, you cannot be worn out. As the psalmist made us to understand, your youth will be renewed but the adversity and the adversary will wear out. They will be consumed but you will be renewed. You must know it and again, say it.
10 “Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.” Here, the prophet makes us see that your fear of God which establishes you and your obedience to His servants which prosper you may sometimes seem not to be enough. In spite of these, life may still not allow you to breakthrough. You may still wallow in adversity and discouragement but he says clearly that we must stand. He tells us to trust in the NAME of the Lord our God. Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.” Never let adversity make you forget the name of the Lord God whom you fear and whose servants you obey. Remembering God’s name reminds you of who He is. The name of God carries the qualities of God so when you remember His name, you remember His infallibility. It reminds you of His greatness. It reminds you of the one in whose name your pastors have spoken to you. What is His name? He is the “I AM THAT I AM”. As long as you desire His will, He will always be whatever and whoever you need Him to be in your life. He will be your Shalom (peace), Jireh (provider), Shammah (one who is there), Rapha (healer), Raah (Shepherd), etc whenever you need Him to be so. Remembering His name gives you peace and comfort because you know that HE CANNOT DENY HIMSELF.
11 Behold, all ye that kindle a fire, that compass yourselves about with sparks: walk in the light of your fire, and in the sparks that ye have kindled. This shall ye have of mine hand; ye shall lie down in sorrow.” Stop your scheming. Stop your cleverness. Stop! The results you generate will not sustain you through life. Only what God gives you will. Do not subscribe to the sorrow that comes by trying to be a self-made man. Go for the joy and prosperity that comes from being helped by God. Be a God-made man and your joy will be full indeed.
God has promised. Isaiah 41: 10 says, “ Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness.” Now you must believe and say Isaiah 50: 7, “For the Lord GOD will help me; therefore shall I not be confounded: therefore have I set my face like a flint, and I know that I shall not be ashamed.”
